You Can Make A DIfference Now Campaign

The Women's Aid Organization (WAO) is an independent, non-religious, non-governmental organisation committed to confronting violence against women. Established in 1982, WAO's Refuge provides a safe place for survivors of domestic violence, single mothers, abused migrant women, including domestic workers and trafficked women.

In addition to empowering women, WAO also operates a Child Care Centre (CCC), which provides full-time care for children of former residents of the Refuge who are getting their lives back on track.

Just last week, WAO launched the "You Can Make a Difference Now!" (MAD) Campaign - with the aim of generating public awareness on the increasing number of women who want to leave a violent relationship and lead a life that knows no violence, physical torment and/or sexual abuse.

Through the campaign, WAO hopes to raise RM300,000 by the end of 31st December 2011 to support its Refuge and Child Care Centre (CCC) and WAO's 3rd Centre for advocacy work.

The amount being raised will contribute to the RM1 million needed each year to sustain and maintain the WAO centres, which creates positive impact in the lives of these abused women and children. Between January and June 2011, there were a total of 1,926 police reports made on domestic violence in Malaysia.

"Violence against women has been going on for many years and it can happen anywhere and to anyone. Through the 'You Can Make a Difference Now!' campaign, we want to educate the public on this issue, create more advocates and promote awareness on how they too can make a difference", said Mok Chuang Lian, President of WAO.

The campaign thus far, has garnered strong support from women's rights advocates' namely social activist Marina Mahathir, writer and TV host Asha Gill, TV, event and Mix FM radio host, Serena C and THR Aanantha. The ladies went the extra mile by washing two cars that belonged to Malakoff Corporation Berhad during the launch to raise funds and the company presented RM2,000 to WAO as a token of contribution.
