SHELTER/REFUGE

A. GENERAL INFORMATION

  • 105 women were given shelter in 2000.
  1. Reasons for seeking shelter
    • While women seek refuge primarily because of domestic violence (65%), WAO also offers shelter to women who are faced with other problems and are in need of refuge.
    • 83 women came because of a violent situation of some kind (79%).

  2. Number of Children
    • 90 children came with their mother to the shelter.
    • The majority of the women (58%) did not bring their children with them to the shelter.
    • The women seeking refuge will sometimes bring their children with them or sometimes leave them to be taken care of by somebody else. e.g. their own mother, their family, their husband, a home etc. So even though the women had a total of 188 children, only 90 were brought to the shelter.
    • 26% of the women that came for shelter do not have any children.
    • 14 out of the 15 foreign domestic workers did not have their children with them as they had to leave them behind in their own country in search of work in Malaysia.
