FACE - TO - FACE COUNSELLING

A. GENERAL INFORMATION

  • 44 women came for face - to - face counselling in 2000.
  • 20 of them (46%) were ex-residents. WAO offers on-going counselling to the ex-residents that still face various problems.
  1. Problems faced
    • More than half of the women (57%) come for counselling because of domestic violence.
    • The ex-residents make for 89% of the 18 women coming for face-to-face counselling for reasons other than domestic violence.

  2. Other problems faced
    • The other problems that are discussed in face-to-face counselling are mostly problems with the children (22%), child custody and maintenance issues (11%) and financial problems (11%).

    Source of awareness

    • The major source of awareness is through personal contacts: themselves (as ex-residents), friends or family. Other sources of awareness that were mentioned were the media and other NGOs.

    • 92% of the clients stay in Selangor or in Wilayah Persekutuan (Kuala Lumpur).

  • 25 women came for face-to-face counselling because of domestic violence

    • The most frequent type of abuse is psychological, occurring in 80% of the cases. Physical abuse occurs in 68% of the cases.

  2. Length of time in abusive situation
    • This information was not available for the majority of the clients. But where it was available, it showed that the clients had been abused mostly for a period between 1 to 5 years.
