Perspectives on Domestic Violence

A Coordinated Community Response to a Community Issue
A 2017 Report by Women's Aid Organisation (WAO)

What is it like to be a domestic violence survivor in Malaysia? Do survivors get the protection and justice they deserve? How can we better serve survivors?

This report aims to answer these questions, drawing from the stories of 21 domestic violence survivors. Their stories illustrate how a coordinated community response from all relevant stakeholders – governmental and non-governmental – must respond to end domestic violence.

The report is relevant to various stakeholders: policymakers, police officers, welfare officers, hospitals, NGO service provider, among others. It aims to help the reader:

  1. Understand domestic violence, from real stories of survivors (see Case Studies and Highlights)
  2. Consider what they can do to stop domestic violence (see Recommendations)
  3. Obtain a tool for training and education (see Tina's Journey)
